We were recently invited to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Grange by Penfolds at Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur, with an evening of wine, food and a vertical tasting of one of Australia’s most iconic wines.
First created in 1951 by Penfolds’ first Chief Winemaker, Max Schubert, Grange began as an ambitious experiment inspired by his travels through Europe. His vision was to create a full-bodied Australian red with the structure and ageing potential of the great wines he had encountered overseas.
75 years later, that experiment has become the flagship expression of Penfolds’ House Style. Today, Grange continues under the custodianship of Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago, who carries Schubert’s vision forward.
The anniversary dinner featured a vertical tasting of Grange, paired with a specially curated menu that allowed us to experience how the wine evolves across vintages.
There was something quite special about tasting 75 years of history in a glass, from Schubert’s original experiment to the Grange we know today.
