Brouwerij Martens Bochol Craft Beers Comes to Malaysia

Brouwerij Martens Bochol (the Marten Bochol Brewery) from Belgium has officially launched a series of their specialty craft beers at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur recently.

The brewery was founded 260 years ago in 1758 and is an independent company. Today, Jan and Fons Martens are the eighth generation in the family; who are still continuing the tradition of brewing beers.

We were introduced to:

1) Kristoffel White (5% abv), Blond (6% abv) and Dark (6%). Named after the Saint Kristoffel in the church at the heart of Bocholt, the Kristoffel range are abbey style beers, made with high fermentation. Kristoffel White is a cloudy unfiltered beer, Blond is made with a combination of barley, cornmeal and a special selection of aromatic hops and Dark with a selection of special malts and aromatic hops.

2) Sezoens Blond (6% abv) - a top fermented ale that is made using a special double dry-hopping process.

3) Boot Tread (5% abv) - An amber ale brewed with Saaz hops

4) 1758 IPA (6.5% abv) is brewed in small batches with a blend of 6 different type of hops, this beer marks the year that Brouwerij Martens Bocholt is established.

All beers are available in selected Village Grocer stores, Jaya Grocer stores, all BIG supermarkets and selected bars in the country. Dionysus Asia Sdn Bhd brings them in and you can check them out on https://www.dionysusasia.com/home

An Evening with Hawkers Beer at Taps Beer Bar

Image: MyTipsyTurvy
Australian-born Hawkers beer is actually a standard offering from Taps. a group of us got to spend an evening with founder Mazen Hajjar to taste more of his ‘fucking good beer” (his words) with him and to get schooled on what makes a beer good.

Hawkers' name was inspired by the early immigrant colonial street vendors in Australia that saw trade expand in cities across the country. Craft beer distilleries did nothave budgets for marketing or channels of distribution, thus can't fight the big boy companies for sales volume. Many also through trade word of mouth and door to door sales.

According to Mazen, the best food to pair with Hawkers beer is with… hawker food. Well, think of it this way. The biggest volume of sales by the big beer boys come from our kopitiams. Hands down, any good beer just tastes superb with some good street chow.

According to Mazen, “If a person says s/he does not like beer, that’s only because they’ve been introduced to the wrong fucking beer to start off with".  Which is why, if you visit Hawkers' website, https://hawkers.beer/, you'll see that they have quite a variety of beers. From the light lagers to the heavy stouts and limited edition barrel aged, there is a beer for everyone and every occasion.

More of Hawkers beer will be featured at Taps Beer bar in future, but for now, the ones that are already available have been fucking good. Pardon my Ozzie.

Insta Weekly : Happy 58 Years old, Malaysia - Keep Your Peels - Arran Whisky Fling - Junior @ #tikitakeover44 - Taps' Better Beer Festival

Long post ahead! So no need for a filler introduction! Just go go go!

1. Jungle Bird for Merdeka #58

I've made the Jungle Bird quite a few times already just to practice. Practice practice practice makes perfect! If you're a true blue Malaysian  then this is one cocktail you should learn to make (and perhaps an Old Fashioned) to impress guests or a date, because if there are only 2 things that we are all unitedly proud of, it's our F(ood) and our B(everage).

Post-event Report: 44 Bar & Taps Beer Bar Presents Beer Bourbon Bacon!

10 August 2015 was the Beer Bourbon Bacon event jointly brought to us by 44 Bar and Taps Beer Bar, held at Tap's Mont Kiara branch.

First up - HOW FREAKING COOL IS IT THAT TWO AWESOME BARS GOT TOGETHER TO HOST AN EVENT?

Sorry about the caps, but this kind of collaboration hardly ever happens in this market, if ever. If you can name me 3 - you win liao loh! But as far as I can remember, ZILCH.  But I digress, as usual.

Anyway, using extensive research methods (Googling), I deduced that this event is inspired by annual festivals of the same name held all over America. Imagine a giant pesta with loads of craft beers, bourbons and all kinds of food with pork.

If you were thinking - Ya right, no way an event where you need to pay RM88 would draw any crowd, it's sooooo expensive. Well, I hate to say this but you're wrong from the sheer fact that Taps Mont Kiara was maximum packed (which is unusual for a Sunday afternoon) with locals and mat sallehs alike. Even the floor upstairs was opened and the seats were filled up!

So what went down that day? Read on!

Insta Weekly: Maruhi Sakaba - The Great Beer Bar - #MyTigerBites - 44 Bar Promos - Neroteca Brunch - DIY Old Fashioned

Last weekend, a good friend proposed that I should consider migrating from blogspot to wordpress, because it's more flexible and the layout allows me to come up with a very sleek, magazine-like feel.

He showed me a test site, which I really like. But I'm not sure if I have the time/energy/intelligence to toggle around with the coding. Wordpress, while is infinitely more moudable than Blogger, requires quite a bit of HTML knowledge to mess around with. I find myself not having enough time to even update this blog more than once a week (which I should because I have quite a few feature posts in the back burner argh!).

But I know that with Wordpress, readers would enjoy my blog more simply because it will look better, plus there are even more awesome, cooler usable widgets that comes with it. Oh man. How do I account for the opportunity cost of time vs traffic?

Let me mull over it for a bit more. I'm a really slow thinker. Meanwhile, here, the weekly update which I make myself to commit to (at least!):

1. Maruhi Sakaba - an Iazakaya that doesn't break the bank.

Launch: Ippudo (yes that yummy ramen shop!) Bar @ Bangsar Shopping Centre

Firstly, let me get this out of the way - I LOVE Ippudo ramen. It is the best after-drinks food EVER. Nothing beats a pipping hot bowl of noodles swimming in a pool of delicious broth of pork after you're high from slightly over-imbibing. So what I'm going to say after this may be SIGHTLY biased. :P

I was so excited to find out that Ippudo launched a new bar in BSC last week - especially since it's going to be a full-fledged Japanese concept bar.

Sure you say, BSC is FILLED with bars. Do you really need ANOTHER bar?

Yes I say. Hell YES. A million times YES.

Some psychedelic lighting was happening at the launch party - but we were assured that on normal non-event days, it will be cosy & non-intrusive.
